After 100 years in the making, Saskatoon's newest traffic bridge became a reality on Wednesday.

Hundreds of residents joined in the celebration to mark the opening of the Circle Drive South Bridge.

A parade that included pedestrians and cyclists kicked off the celebration which was then followed by speeches from dignitaries from all three levels of government.

Honking the horn in a brand new white corvette, Mayor Don Atchison signaled the start of the parade.

The city has said the new bridge will help unite the city, cut commute times in half and alleviate congestion on other roadways.

The Bruce Kemp cycling group said the new bridge will shorten their weekly Saturday ride from Doug's Spoke 'N Sport on Eighth

Street to Pike Lake by 20 minutes.

Although cyclists and pedestrians were given the first opportunity to cross the new six lane bridge, vehicles won't be allowed to across until 8 p.m.

The bridge, and 10 kilometres of connecting roadways is the city's largest infrastructure project with a price tag of 300-million dollars.
