Accused in April police standoff pleads not guilty

One of the men accused of taking part in an April 4 standoff with police in Prince Albert’s West Flat pleaded not guilty Thursday to two charges stemming from the incident.

Cole Sanderson, 19, appeared in a Prince Albert Provincial Court room surrounded by family. His lawyer, James Streeton entered the plea on Sanderson’s behalf.

Sanderson faces one forcible confinement charge and one charge of assault with a weapon causing bodily harm.

Sanderson and Justin William Ryan Charles, both of Prince Albert, face charges in connection with the April 4 standoff. Charles has also been charged with forcible confinement, assault with a weapon causing bodily harm, as well as fabricating evidence and breach of an undertaking.

Police had barricaded 15th Street West between 19th and 20th Avenues for about five hours after responding to a complaint about a person being held against their will inside a residence.

The people inside allegedly refused to communicate with the police, and one of the occupants was allegedly holding a handgun.

The SWAT team and police negotiators were called in before the situation was resolved without further incident.

Sanderson’s two-day trial has been set for Sept. 25 and 26.
