New NDP leader fires shots at Sask Party in first Question Period

Mar 12, 2013 | 6:39 AM

Cam Broten got right to work on his first day in Question Period as the leader of the Saskatchewan NDP on Monday.

Broten was chosen as the party's leader on Saturday in a come-from-behind win over contenders Dr. Ryan Meili, and seat mate Trent Wotherspoon. There was no basking in the glory of his victory, though, with Broten spending Sunday and Monday morning meeting with his NDP MLA's, shuffling critic duties and preparing for Question Period.

“It's an exciting time for our party, I'm exciting about this next chapter for our party, as well as the province,” Broten said in his opening remarks. Broten went on to question Premier Brad Wall on a number of issues, including the Film Employment Tax Credit and cuts to education. The NDP leader said that the Sask Party has become stubborn, and can't admit when its made a mistake.

“I really enjoyed asking the questions. I didn't quite so much enjoy the answers because I felt like they really came up short from the premier.”

Broten says he's been given the honour and opportunity to hold the government to account.

“It's also a weight on one's shoulder because we have a job to do as the NDP. I recognize that. But that's a job I'm committed to, a job I want to be successful in doing.”

Wall retorted to some of Broten's comments by accusing the new leader of reading from the same playbook as previous leader Dwain Lingenfelter. Wall said Broten's leadership campaign was a virtual copy of the NDP's election platform from 2011, which was rejected by Saskatchewan voters.

Broten admitted mistakes were made in the campaign, but said the policy had good ideas. He also clarified that he did not write the 2011 platform, but did lead consultations with the public that created it.
