Mayor’s race in Melfort could be tight

Property taxes, development, and infrastructure are expected to be some hot issues during the Melfort Mayoral race.

Incumbent Doug Terry, has sat in the big chair for roughly one year. He took over after former Mayor Kevin Phillips was elected MLA.

“We've lost a lot of veteran councillors that are not running again. I stand to see at least five new councillors on council. I think it's important to have some consistency,” said Terry.

Terry will be the first to admit that he has barely gotten his feet wet as Mayor, and there remains a number of projects he would like to help push forward, one of course being the Stonegate Mall Development.

“When that all comes to fruition over the next few years, it will be a nice asset to Melfort,” he said.
Challenging Terry is long time City Councillor Rick Lang, who made the decision to run for Mayor when Kevin Phillips stepped down.

“If I'm elected Mayor, the Mayor's door will always be open for any input, from any citizen or business,' said Lang.

Like Terry, Lang said he would also encourage growth and development in Melfort, but adds that the approach should be taken without driving up the city's debt.

“I think that growth is going to continue but as a city we have to make sure we facilitate that growth. We don't necessarily have to spend money to drive that growth anymore. I think we have to be more of a facilitator instead of a monetary driver of the growth.”

Both candidates said they would push to keep property taxes low. Terry feels the current level of taxation is quite fair and comparable to other cities of the same size.

“I think everybody's pretty pleased with the balance that we have in Melfort for recreation, education and health care; and it's a matter of keeping it that way,” said Terry.

Other issues that Lang said he is campaigning on are enhanced medical services for the hospital and lobbying for a domestic violence shelter for the northeast.
