Melfort mayor gives resignation

After Dec. 31, Kevin Phillips can solely focus on being the MLA of the Melfort constituency.

The mayor of Melfort sent a letter to council Monday indicating he would give up the mayor’s chair effective Jan.1.

Phillips could have left immediately, but that would have triggered a byelection, something he decided wasn’t in the best interest of the city.

“I talked to so many people in the last couple months — voter fatigue and also monetary considerations, as far as the cost of a byelection (are concerns), so I tried to look at it from all angles,” he said.

Phillips said he’s leaving the city in the capable hands of the current council.

“That is a good a group of people that I have so much confidence in … They are going to provide the best possible council for the next 11 months.”

In January, council will choose one of their own to serve as mayor until the municipal election in October.

Phillips was serving his second term as mayor until he decided to run for the Saskatchewan Party in the Melfort constituency after Rod Gantefoer retired.

He won the riding by collecting 73 per cent of the vote.
