Regina airport radar no replacement for Environment Canada

Jul 26, 2011 | 6:52 AM

A troubled weather station in Bethune went down twice during one week in the month of July, leaving area residents in the dark about weather conditions.

The radar, which is charged with watching over Regina and all of south-central Saskatchewan, had been non-operational during several bouts of severe weather warnings.

The issue has even prompted MP Tom Lukiwski to call for an investigation.

Since then it has been noted that the Regina airport uses a different radar system.

But Jim Hunter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Regina’s Airport Authority, says that the radar provided by Navigation Canada is primarily for tracking planes — and the aviation industry gets most of its weather information from Environment Canada.

“It certainly does not have the capability of the Doppler radar that’s located in Bethune,” said Hunter.

When asked if he's concerned about the recent outages, Hunter says if there were a tornado coming it would likely be a concern to everyone.
