Teachers readying for strike vote

Apr 6, 2011 | 11:50 AM

A deal between the Saskatchewan government and the Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation has yet to be reached and the clock is ticking down to a strike vote.

The union and their provincial employer are stuck in labour negotiations over a potential wage increase.

The main issue is the union request for a 12 per cent wage increase, with the government countering at five per cent.

Gwen Dueck with the Saskatchewan Teacher's Federation said the increase is a fair request.

“Teachers’ (salaries) historically have been aligned with those of nurses and MLAs and that’s no longer the case,” she said.

“Right now a beginning teacher with a four-year degree makes $46,000 or so… while an MLA’s base salary starts $89,000.”

If no agreement can be reached, the vote is expected to take place next Wednesday.
