Local architects clean up at business awards

Apr 6, 2011 | 6:30 AM

Businesses from around the city were honoured by their peers on Tuesday night during the 2010 Samuel McLeod Prince Albert Business Awards.

Many businesses were called to the stage of the E.A. Rawlinson Centre, but most was the local branch of AODBT Architecture + Interior Design who won three awards including the coveted Business of the Year Award.

Leslie Blacklock, managing partner at the firm, said she was surprised and thankful to be recognized by the business community.

“It’s incredibly exciting and humbling and very surprising,” she said. “But, we’ve been very busy in the past few years and have really enjoyed ourselves here.”

Over the years, the firm has been involved in numerous projects around Prince Albert that can now very well be considered landmarks, including St. Mary High School, Art Hauser Centre, Alfred Jenkins Field House, the Provincial Court House, and Forestry Centre.

All that work means the company’s been very busy and that was recognized when they were awarded with best job creation in the city.

“We continue to be so busy that we have just needed to add additional technologists, designers and architects and we’ve done that over the last few years and we’re also hiring a new grad from SIAST in June,” Blacklock said.

Not only are they keeping busy, but Blacklock said they always try to incorporate sustainable and energy efficient designs in their projects.

Once again, the group’s effort in that regard was validated when the firm was given the environment award.

“We look for new and interesting ways to do green building design,” said Blacklock. “It’s all about designing a sustainable foot print, using green building initiatives and that’s how we take care of the environment.”

Of course, the night wasn’t all about AODBT.
