SPCA urges Saskatchewan ranchers to protect livestock from potential flooding

The SPCA is asking Saskatchewan farmers and ranchers to make sure their animals are safe in case of potential flooding this spring.

“There are certain disease problems that can crop up in wet conditions, like foot rot or respiratory problems,” said animal protection services manager Kaley Pugh. “But we're more concerned with animals being stranded in flooded pastures or with producers not being able to access their animals to feed and care for them.”

Pugh remembers how many livestock were stranded in pastures after flooding last year, and says making sure ranchers have access to both the animals and to their food and water is extremely important.

While it may be too early to move livestock just yet, Pugh says it's never too early to start hatching an emergency plan. That includes storing extra food and water in a dependable place.
