Mintos complete the sweep, advance to league championship

Mar 8, 2011 | 8:17 PM

The Prince Albert Mintos are moving on to the Saskatchewan Midget AAA hockey final.  They scored four unanswered power play goals in the second period on their way to a 5-2 win over the Notre Dame Argos to win the best of five semi final 3-0 in front of 623 fans at the Art Hauser Centre.

Landon Belchamber opened the scoring 3:57 into the first period blocking a shot at the Minto blueline and scoring on a shorthanded breakaway by ripping a wrister into the top corner on Argos starting goaltender Alexandre Savard.

However it was Minto goaltender Taran Kozun who shut the door on that same power play with a big save right after the Belchamber goal and added 10 more stops in the first period.

The Mintos started to pull away with Belchamber's power play goal less than 6 minutes into the second period.  Tad Kozun would added two and Brennan Bosovich another power play goal to give the Mintos a 5-0 lead heading to the third period.  Head Coach Tim Leonard said the key was staying disciplined and making the Argos pay for a steady stream to the penalty box in the second period.  The Mintos would go 4-for-8 on the power play and killed off all four Argo power plays.

Although the Argos would score the only two goals of the third period Taran Kozun would turn in his best work of the game as several of the 11 shots by Notre Dame in the final period were of high quality.

Kozun would finish the night with 26 saves while brother Tad would add an assist to his two goals and Bosovich picked up a pair of assists to go along with his second period goal.

Leonard is happy the series is over noting the Mintos are a little beat up heading into the league final.  He is confident veteran forward Tyson Dallman will be ready for the championship series.  Affilaited players Matt Anholt and Brett Njaa took several shifts last night and made signigicant contributions.

The league final will likely start early next week.  The Mintos as regular season champions will have home ice advantage.  They will meet the Saskatoon Contacts who completed a three game sweep of Moose Jaw in their semi final with last night's 2-1 win in overtime.
