Stolen vehicle, pursuit and robbery keep police busy

Feb 18, 2011 | 9:42 AM

Prince Albert Police arrested four people Thursday for two separate incidents in the city.

The drama began around 4:30 p.m. when police were called about a stolen vehicle in the area of 12th Ave and 16th Street West. Police located the stolen vehicle a short time later in the downtown district.

“In following the suspect we observed the vehicle to strike another vehicle in traffic, causing some minor damage. At that point the vehicle fled from police,” said Sgt. Kelly McLean.

The vehicle was going through traffic signs and driving through school zones at a high rate of speed, Mclean said.

“It’s very dangerous activity anytime you have someone running from police in a municipal environment.” Thankfully speeds never exceed 60 kilometres per hour, McLean said.

The chase came to an end in a midtown neighborhood when the suspect stopped the vehicle in the area of 10th Street and Fifth Avenue East.

Two passengers, a male, 31, from Candle Lake and a female, 25, from Prince Albert were arrested without incident and are now facing charges. The driver, a 26-year-old from Little Red First Nation, fled on foot and tried to evade officers by hiding in a garage.

Police contained the area with several patrol cars and located the suspect with the help of their K-9 unit.

“It was a good tight containment by patrol. They set up very, very well and the guy had limited options,” said McLean.

The driver is facing several charges failing to stop for police, possession of stolen property, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and break-and-enter.

The entire incident was over in about 20 minutes, McLean said.

Armed Robbery

At about 8:40 p.m. police were called to the 900-block of Cook Drive where a robbery had taken place.

The male suspect obtained cash and a cell phone from another man using a weapon, said McLean.

“It looked like it happened in a vehicle outside of a residence on the street.”

Police located the suspect about two hours later and preformed a high risk vehicle stop in the area of 2nd Ave and 16th Street West. A Prince Albert male, 20, was arrested without incident.

The investigation is continuing and charges are pending, said McLean.
