Better deal for bus pass vendors

Feb 8, 2011 | 12:08 PM

The city’s transportation division want to increase bus pass sales by making it more lucrative for the vendors that sell them on the city’s behalf.

A report from transportation is asking that vendors be given 10 per cent of the sale value of passes, up from the 1 per cent they currently receive.

For transportation manager Paul Georget, more vendors will make it more convenient for riders to purchase passes and hopefully increase ridership overall.

“It’s to try and encourage more people to use the bus,” said Georget.

“Currently, there are only four locations (to buy passes) and that only, kind of, covers a small portion of the area of the city.

“The goal was to find more vendors throughout the area and areas where there is no vendor at the moment.”

In addition to benefitting bus users, Georget said the hope is to also provide a bigger benefit for businesses both in their revenues and the patronage of bus users.

“A one per cent commission wasn’t very much,” he said.

“Changing it to 10 per cent may provide the opportunity to make a little money but mainly also provide the opportunity for people to go through their stores and increase foot traffic.”

On Monday, the city’s executive committee approved the report and recommended that city council approve it.

City council will vote on the recommendation next week.
