The bitter cold means many of us have been cranking up the thermostat of late.

That's resulted in SaskEnergy coming very close to breaking its seven year all time record for natural gas usage. 1.01 petajoules were used over a 24-hour period starting Monday morning, which is shy of the 1.12 petajoules used on Jan. 27, 2004.

“It's hard to imagine a unit of natural gas but a petajoule is million gigajoules and the average home uses about 107 gigajoules a year,” said Dave Burdeniuk, manager of communications for SaskEnergy.

Burdeniuk said the increase is mostly due to the temperatures, but also the increased customer base.

“We've obviously had customer growth over the last few years at quite an incredible pace and we've increased our system capacity to match that.”

The peak time for natural gas usage is in the morning when people are waking up.
