Extreme wind chill hitting Saskatchewan

Jan 19, 2011 | 3:47 PM

People in Saskatchewan will have to bundle up as the temperature drops to -30 Celsius and the wind chill makes it feel like its -40.

This extreme wind chill will last for Wednesday night and all day Thursday. It's due to an Arctic system with high winds blowing through Saskatchewan.

But, those winds are also bringing in some Pacific air. That will warm up Regina and Saskatoon to temperatures in the single digits.

David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada, said this winter has flip-flopped between cold and warm, which is unusual.

“We always know the weather changes quickly in Saskatchewan, but this is ridiculous,” Phillips pointed out. “If you don't like the weather out your front door, look out your back door.”

He said the explanation is alternating Arctic and Pacific systems rolling across Canada and meeting in our province.

“It really is the cold air from the North duking it out with the milder, more moisture-laden air from the Pacific. The battleground seems to be over parts of southern and central Saskatchewan,” he said.
