Thin ice a big concern

Jan 3, 2011 | 6:24 AM

The Saskatchewan Snowmobilers Association has a motto for conditions like these.

“If you don’t know don’t go,” said Jeannie Brewer, with the association.

Brewer said the significant snowfall that’s covered many areas in the province, including Prince Albert, has made for a bit of a problem.

“It really is an issue and on some of the lakes what’s happened is that the snowfall has insulated the ice, therefore it’s not freezing,” Brewer said.

“There seems to be situations where there is water out in the field or even in some of the right of ways there’s still water and they just need to be cautious and watch for the signs. If there’s no snow mobile trail signs, don’t go that way.”

With new years and holiday parties going on this time of year, Brewer also cautioned people with another motto, Don’t Drink and Ride.

“The weathers been so good, and the snow is good up in your area, you know, so there will be lots of sledders out there.”

Thin ice is not just a problem for people who are riding in a new area. Brewer said some trials in the province have been changing altogether and that it’s best to use caution even when heading out on trails that may be familiar from last year.
