Generosity fattened the Christmas kettle, but there’s room for more

The amount of money given in the annual Salvation Army Kettle Campaign exceeded last year but didn’t reach the amount they were hoping for.

The Kettle Campaign is the only fundraiser the Salvation Army does throughout the year. The money goes to cover Christmas expenses, including the nearly 500 hampers that they gave out and the Christmas Day dinner.

“That exacts quite an expense and then over and above that we have our year round expenses for our family services,” Glen Patey, Salvation Army Major, said.

The Salvation Army covered their cost this year and as long as they budget wisely Patey said they should be able to hold up until the next Christmas season.

Patey said, they are about close to $5,000 over last year’s total. He pegged people’s generosity and the fact that a number of groups took part this year as a reason for the increase.

“They were just having a good time and encouraging their friends to give and that sort of thing,” Patey said.

“Our final total is going to be somewhere around $110,000. That’s a little less then what we hoped to get but you do with what you have … were very, very appreciative of every penny that’s been given.”

Patey said people can still give to the fund by calling the Salvation Army at 763-6078.
