It was a busy year of hope and speculation for the Prince Albert Pulp Mill.

Early in the year, Domtar, who owns the facility, was in talks with Shell and Iogen to turn the facility into an ethanol plant, but these talks broke down in September.

When that happened there was a flurry of activity as Domtar worked on environmental study, in order to demolish the building while at the same time the province said they were working to facilitate the sale with other groups.

By November, rumours began circulating that Dutch company Paper Excellence was looking to purchase the plant. Domtar denied talks were taking place.

While they were actively denying the sale, the paper mill’s union were having talks and even voted in favour of the sale to Paper Excellence. So far nothing has come out of that decision.

Currently, Domtar maintains there is not plan to sell the facility to Paper Excellence, but says they are currently in talks with at least three other groups and also keeps the option of demolishing the building.
