Sports stories of 2010, #8 Joel Broda’s jump to the pros

Dec 24, 2010 | 5:53 AM

Joel Broda from Prince Albert made headlines over the summer by signing two pro hockey contracts.

His jump to the pros makes one of the top sports stories in Prince Albert in 2010.

The 21 year old agreed to a deal with Salzberg of the Austrian League and immediately flew to Europe to begin training camp. But before he could play a game, a certain NHL team made a bid on the Prince Albert product.

The Minnesota Wild came calling after Broda's NHL rights became available, when the Washington Capitals didn't offer their 2008 draft choice a contract. With an out clause in his Salzberg deal he was given the choice to stay in North America.

The three year entry level deal with Minnesota saw Joel Broda start his pro career in Houston of the American Hockey League.

He was then assigned to Bakersfield of the East Coast Hockey League after scoring five goals in 18 games as an Aero.

Broda won a WHL championship last season with Calgary and scored 133 goals in five seasons in the league with the Hitmen, Moose Jaw and Tri City.

Joel scored a career beast 53 goals in 2008-09, while splitting time with the Warriors and Hitmen.
