Local police officer killed in early morning rollover

Dec 18, 2010 | 2:17 PM

A member of the Prince Albert Police Service died in a single-vehicle accident this morning.

At about 6 a.m. Const. Tim Ballantyne rolled his car on Highway 3 about 3.5 kilometres south of Prince Albert.

The officer was off duty at the time, driving his personal car.

Staff Sgt. Bill Chow, with the Prince Albert police, said Ballantyne was with the service for five years.

“He started out in our mentoring program and went to Police College and graduated from Police College. He has been with us since March, 2005.”

Chow said Ballantyne was “well liked within the membership” and called him a “family man.”

The officer was originally from Northern Saskatchewan.

Chow said it is a hard day at the office.

“It’s early in our time of grief right now, but everybody has been notified. It’s a situation that we are not familiar with when it comes to one of our members, but at the end of the day we will deal with it as best as possible,” he said.

Chow said Ballentyne will be missed.

Police chief, Dale McFee, is also sending out condolences to Ballantyne’s family, friends and extended police family.

Ballantyne was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The incident is still under investigation by the RCMP.
