Saskatchewan government comes out with child-welfare review

Dec 16, 2010 | 3:06 PM

The Saskatchewan child welfare-review is making twelve recommendations to better protect children.

Titled for the good of our children and youth, the report was released by government Thursday afternoon.

It implies that because of cultural differences there still remains a them versus us approach. Which is why the government is being urged to allow First Nations and Metis groups to have greater control of their own children.

Particularly as the panel finds there are now more aboriginal children in care than there were in residential schools.

The report also recommends a more accessible streamlined system, enhanced child-focused legislation, and that the courts should be the final, not the first, stop.

In response, the government has announced a Children and Youth Agenda to look at how these recommendations can be adopted going forward.

A Cabinet Committee has been developed so that all family-serving ministries work in collaboration. That committee will release a more detailed response in the spring along with a joint budget submission.
