Province supports the work of the Red Cross

The work the Saskatchewan Red Cross is doing to help those impacted by flooding this year received a major boost Monday.

The organization has received $200,000 from the government to reach its fundraising goal of $500,000.

“The Red Cross played a critical role working side by side with the government to assist victims of this summer's flooding,” said Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister, Yogi Huyghebaert, in a government news release.

“While the province's emergency response teams were helping communities mitigate damage from flooding, the Red Cross was tending to many of the residents' physical needs, including food, clothing and shelter. For their efforts and on behalf of Saskatchewan residents we thank them.”

The Red Cross' Cindy Fuchs said they are still helping about 150 or so families get back on their feet.

“Sometimes the systems or the insurance they get … doesn't quite cover all of the cost, so we might help them a little in the interim,” she said.

Four thousand applications have been made to the provincial disaster assistance program. The government is now dealing with claims that were unknown at the time of the flooding like developing mold.
