Indian firm talks with province about the P.A. pulp mill

Another company has entered the Prince Albert pulp mill sweepstakes.

India based, Aditya Birla is interested in purchasing the shuttered facility from Domtar, said Bill Boyd minister of energy and resources in a phone interview, Tuesday.

“They’re a dissolving pulp company. They turn pulp into fabric, rayon so it’s into a different market, a higher-end market,” said Boyd.

The Saskatchewan Party government has been working with Domtar to facilitate a sale. Until recently, Netherlands-based Paper Excellence was thought to be close to purchasing after signing a labor deal with the mill's union.

Domtar nixed the possibility when it said it was not negotiating with Paper Excellence and would not sell to a competitor.

Boyd said Aditya Birla would not be considered a competitor because its pulp goes into a different market than Domtar’s.

“It’s early days here,” said Boyd, referring to discussions with both with the province and Domtar.

“It’s obviously good news. For that reason and others, we continue to be optimistic that we’ll see a positive resolution to the mill, either a restart or a repurposing of the facility.”

Boyd said Aditya Birla isn’t the only company that could make a pitch for the mill.

“I think there are two or three companies that are in discussions with Domtar, anyone of them could step forward and make the transaction happen.”

Boyd wasn’t clear on when a deal could be finalized, explaining it could be days, weeks or a couple of months away from happening.

The Prince Albert pulp mill has been idle since then owner Weyerhaeuser, closed the doors back in 2006 due to poor market conditions.
