St. Anne School behind schedule

Students at St. Anne School will be waiting a bit longer to move into their new home.

The new building was scheduled to open up by the end of January, but the expected move-in date has been bumped back a month.

“It’s pushed back to the end of February,” said Tim Jelinski, director of education for the Prince Albert Roman Catholic Separate School Division.

“We’re hoping that we’ll be up and running then.”

The cold, rainy fall weather is partially to blame for the setbacks, but a warm October kept them on track. The other thing that set them back was finding enough qualified tradespeople to get the job done, Jelinski said.

He said they are under a lot of pressure to get into the new school.

“We actually have two classrooms in part of the new school and the kids come back and forth across the field,” he said, explaining they are portable classrooms so they are separate from the rest of the school.

“The kids are adjusting well, but they have to come back and forth to go to the bathroom or use the library or that sort of thing … It’s an inconvenience in that regard.”

The school is also very full, enrolment was up this year with the anticipated new facility, Jelinski said.

“When we have assemblies, our gymnasium is packed to the rafters.”

He said they are excited to get into the new facility, but they don’t want to rush the work ensuring that it is done right.

Jelinski said the move-in date was only changed a few weeks ago when the contractor told him they were looking at the end of February.
