SIAST to charge for parking, union unhappy

Nov 2, 2010 | 12:21 PM

Students and staff at SIAST will begin paying for parking next year.

The college informed the city in a letter dated Oct. 14, that paid parking would be introduced to staff at the Woodland Campus Jan. 1 — then to students on July 1.

Parking has been one of the sticking points in the bargaining talks between Saskatchewan Government Employee’s Union (SGEU) and SIAST management.

“I'm frustrated that it's going ahead and obviously we are going to want to have discussions with them about that, but bargaining is at an impasse right now and I'm not sure when we are going to be able to deal with that issue,” said Tracey Kurtenbach, chairwoman of the union's Professional Services Negotiating Commitee.

The employer has offered the union a four per cent monetary increase over three years.
“But out of that offer, we have to pay for all the benefits enhancements we want, plus parking, which for people in my bargaining unit could be anywhere from one to one-and-a-half per cent,” said Kurtenbach.

Kurtenbach said she was a bit frustrated that management would still proceed with talks at an impasse.

The union has requested the employer hire a mediator from out of the province.

There has been no reply yet from SIAST management.

SIAST's 700 professional services staff and 1,300 instructors have been without a contract for 15 months.
