UPDATE: Saskatoon police search for baby at landfill

Nov 1, 2010 | 2:48 PM

Officers from the Saskatoon Police Service are combing an area of the Saskatoon landfill, looking for the body of a baby girl.

Police have been talking with a 17-year-old girl who lives in the city's northeast. Police believe the girl gave birth to the baby over the Thanksgiving long weekend. The dead baby was then placed in a garbage container outside her home, picked up by the City and transported to the landfill.

Alyson Edwards with city police said they are using a cadaver dog, borrowed from Calgary Police.

“That cadaver dog has been out and swept the area once this afternoon. We have 14 personnel on site who are trained in grid-searching. They are going behind the dog to try to sift through layers of waste that exist here at the landfill,” she said during a news conference in Saskatoon.
