Student enrolment is up at the University of Saskatchewan. To compete with other universities, the U of S has increased its overseas recruiting, leading to a nine percent rise in international students this year. Russell Isinger is the school's registrar and says the number of self-proclaimed aboriginal students is up, about six percent.
“And that is up from last year. And we're going to do this every year, we're going to have a communications campaign talking about the importance of self-identification, just to keep those numbers as accurate as we can get them,” Isinger said.
He says the increase is even more impressive since there are fewer university-age students in Canada at this time than in the past. Isinger reminds aboriginal students to identify themselves in order to qualify for a number of bursaries and scholarships.
In total, about 16,500 under grad and 2800 graduate students are studying at the U of S this year.
