Harvest is catching up in time for cold weather

Oct 17, 2010 | 3:10 PM

The sun is out, the ground is mostly dry and now that areas like Prince Albert are hitting lows of -7 C overnight, it’s a good thing farmers are reporting the majority of the province's crop is in.
“Provincially our reporters are indicating we’ve got 83 per cent of the crop harvested,” said Grant McLean, with the Ministry of Agriculture
According to McLean, the five-year average for this time of year is around 89 per cent. It means harvest is slightly behind, but not nearly as behind as it started.
Some wet spots are still causing issues. McLean says farmers may need the ground to freeze so they can get combines in the field.
