Attempted murder charge stayed after witnesses refuse to testify

The trial for a man accused of attempted murder after an alleged shooting in downtown Prince Albert last year will not continue after witnesses in the case refused to testify.

Charges against Derrick Leon Laliberte, 25, were stayed Thursday at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Catherine Gagnon, the Crown prosecutor in the case, told paNOW the attempted murder case was stayed because it was difficult to get witnesses to testify. The attempted murder charge related to an alleged shooting that happened at the former “CB Building” in downtown Prince Albert in February of 2017. Gagnon said witnesses were subpoenaed, served orders to appear, arrested, and even charged with contempt of court, but still refused to give evidence.

Gagnon said even the alleged victim in the case, who received a minor flesh wound to the leg, did not wish to see Laliberte charged.
