P.A. athletes flex their muscles at bodybuilding competition

A number of Prince Albert athletes impressed the judges at the Saskatchewan Amateur Bodybuilding Association’s championships, which were held over the past three weeks.

Walter Wildey, 25, finished second overall in the men’s physique event at the novice competition in Regina. This was Wildey’s first year competing, and he admitted he was a bit surprised by how well he did.

“You always go out with a positive attitude towards winning, but when you get there you see the others and you definitely have doubts whether you worked hard enough,” he said.

Wildey’s training for the competition began more than 16 weeks ago. In addition to the physical training, Wildey said he was also introduced to a strict diet plan.

“It wasn’t too hard keeping a meal plan but it was definitely a lot more restricted than what I was used to,” he said.

As one of the top-five finishers, Wildey qualified for the provincial competition last weekend in Saskatoon. He opted out of competing in provincials but said he is determined to get back on the stage soon.

Morgan Holmen, 24, also competed at the novice competition and finished third in the bikini open.

“I didn’t expect to do as well as I did, so that was just kind of the icing on the cake,” she said.

This year marked Holmen’s first official time on stage. She said she tried to prepare for last year’s event but found the strict demands of the training and diet plan too tough. When it came time to give it another shot, she said she didn’t hesitate.

“Having had a bit of a taste of what it was like before and having a really good coach to help me get through it was very helpful,” she said.

Just like Wildey, Holmen said she also plans to compete at provincials in 2019.

Two other Prince Albert athletes also finished in the top five for their categories. Brittanie Lennie finished fourth in the novice bikini open event and Kelsey Pearson, who competed in the naturals competition, finished third in the bikini open event.
