Smith, Penner win vacant Duck Lake council seats

Two new councillors were elected in the Town of Duck Lake, where resignations and a contested mayoral election temporarily left the town four councillors short.

The province appointed two councillors, Bonnie Guigon and Michael Blanchard, to fill the gap in the interim and achieve the quorum necessary to conduct day-to-day business. The Dec. 13 byelection filled the other two vacant seats, and Guigon and Blanchard are expected to step down following a second byelection which will be held in January.

Mayor Donna Piche told paNOW the winners of this week’s byelection were Anne Marie Smith, who netted 60 votes, and Jade Penner, who had 43 ballots. A third candidate, Dennis Lavoie, was the runner-up with 37.

Duck Lake residents will head back to the polls Jan. 24 to fill the two seats currently held by provincial appointees and bring council back to full, elected strength. In a recent interview, Piche told paNOW she hopes adding four new faces helps bring some unity to council.
