Salvation Army marks 125 years

Oct 27, 2017 | 5:00 PM

The Salvation Army is celebrating 125 years in Prince Albert.

The organization was first established in the city Aug. 22, 1892, and since has been active in various church programs and community ministries. The Salvation Army provides low-cost clothing and household items through their thrift store and operates a breakfast and seniors outreach program at The Outpost Café. They also hold monthly worship services at local nursing homes and Pine Grove Correctional Centre, run a Ladies Night Out program and provide opportunities for children to attend summer camp.

One of the Salvation Army’s most successful initiatives in Prince Albert has been their annual Christmas hamper program. Last year they provided hampers to more than 600 households and gifts for more than 1,100 children under age 12.

Cpt. Laura Van Schaick said the organization has been in the area longer than the city itself.

“The Salvation Army was in P.A. before P.A. was established as a city,” she said. “The city has grown and obviously the Salvation Army has grown too, so it’s a big thing to celebrate.”

A few special events are planned this weekend for the anniversary. A paint night will be held Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m., with tickets available at the Thrift Store. Saturday, the store is holding an all-day sale where shoppers will be able to draw for discounts ranging from 10 to 70 per cent off. The anniversary celebration itself will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Salvation Army church on 12th St. E.

Sunday worship begins at 11, with the Saskatoon Temple Band providing music and lunch to follow.
