Police impaired driving case adjourned

Aug 31, 2017 | 5:00 PM

The case of a Prince Albert police officer charged with impaired driving was delayed for a little more than a week today in order to allow the defence a chance to examine the evidence in detail.

Brett Lee Henry, a 35-year-old member of the Prince Albert Police Service with 13 years’ experience, was charged last month following a lengthy police investigation. Deputy Police Chief Jeff Rowden told paNOW the police service received a public tip reporting an impaired driver March 3. Although the police were not immediately able to locate the suspect’s vehicle, Rowden said their subsequent investigation led to a formal charge laid against Henry on July 21. Henry was not on duty at the time of the alleged offence, Rowden said.

Henry remains on paid administrative leave from the police force while the case is before the courts. Rowden said an internal police review will follow the criminal proceedings to determine Henry’s future with the police service.

Today Henry did not appear in court personally. The case was adjourned until Sept. 11 based on a request by Saskatoon-based defence lawyer Michael Owens. According to Owens, the evidence sent to his office contained “a lot of video” which he must review with his client before proceeding.
