Outspoken nurse fined $26,000

An online campaign is trying to help a Prince Albert nurse pay a hefty fine.

The Sask. Registered Nurses Association’s (SRNA) discipline committee handed down a penalty order to Carolyn Strom. In addition to reviewing the standards and practices of registered nurses, Strom is ordered to pay $25,000 by April 1, 2020 and $1,000 by July of this year.

The larger sum is to pay for the investigation and hearing. Failing to pay either will result in Strom’s termination as a nurse.

Strom has also been ordered to write an essay within two months of the decision.

To help pay these penalties, a Gofundme page was setup with a goal of raising $26,000. So far, the group has raised more than $2,000.

The disciplinary action against Strom started back in February 2015 when she criticized the care her grandfather received on Facebook. Strom alleged the facility and employees weren’t providing the best end-of-life care.

SRNA found Strom guilty of professional misconduct back in October. The story has received a lot of attention both locally and across the country with many offering support to Strom on social media.

Strom told paNOW in a statement that she is managing.

“Any time there is anything new on my case, you can imagine that it is quite anxiety provoking,” she said. “I continue to be humbled by the kindness people have shown to me and my family over the last couple years.”
