P.A. jiu jitsu trainer releases training manual

Dec 20, 2016 | 1:15 PM

Goal setting has always been very important for Prince Albert’s Corey Lillis.

From the time he starting training Brazilian jiu jitsu in 2006, he has always made a point to document his training.

Those notes have created the foundation for a new training manual created by Lillis, titled the BJJ training diary.

“When I first started training, I learned the importance of taking detailed notes in training and in competition as something to reflect back on in order to improve and help increase that learning curve,” he said.

Last month, Lillis was promoted to brown belt, and credits his detailed notes for his success.

As an instructor at Complete Martial Arts in Prince Albert, Lillis teaches his own students the importance of taking notes.

“Three or four times a week you’re learning a lot of different techniques so this makes it easier to reflect back on what you learned maybe a month ago,” he said.

Lillis said not every student is a visual learner, other students learn through writing, and the key to helping a student succeed is appealing to his or her individual learning ability.

The manual is now available on Amazon and Lillis said he has great support already.

“Different instructors in Regina and Ontario have all asked for copies of the book, they want to start selling in their own schools. Some copies have gone as far as South Africa,” he said.

Lillis said the jiu jitsu community is very close knit and when somebody comes out with a new product or idea, it is always warmly received.
