XFM “Ballbreaker” raises $50K for food bank

Dec 15, 2016 | 5:00 AM

XFM’s annual “Ballbreaker” promotion was a success, raising more money for the Prince Albert Food Bank than any previous year.

The event, hosted at P.A. Co-op Marketplace, raised more than $50,000 and filled two pallets with food donations.

The Northern Lights Community Development Corporation (NLCDC) and PotashCorp. Matched donations.

Anyone who donated food or cash towards the food bank selected a Christmas ball ornament to be smashed and reveal a prize hidden inside.

Up for grabs this year were tickets to Billy Talent, the P.A. Raiders and Saskatchewan Rush, and numerous gift cards. Every donor was entered into a draw for the grand prizes, a $1,000 Co-op gift card and a remote car starter.

Big donations came in from Cornerstone Insurance, who gave $6,000, and from Boston Pizza and Pharmasave who each matched $1,000 in donations.

Food Bank executive director Wes Clark said he was thrilled to see the number of donations coming in.

“We just love seeing the community coming together to deal with issues like we face every day,” Clark said. “It’s been great.”

He said Christmas means people’s thoughts turn towards the less fortunate, leading to a big push to ensure shelves are stocked into the New Year.

“We’re so thankful,” Clark said.

Blake Charles, general manager of NLCDC was on hand along with Northern Lights Casino general manager Richard Ahenakew to donate $10,000 to the food bank.

“We thought it was a really good idea because it involves the whole community,” Charles said. “Sometimes it’s a little more difficult this time of year, so we’re happy to help out.”

Corinna Laclaire broke a ball during the day’s festivities, and won a $10 Co-op gift card.

“I donated cash for the food bank,” she said. “It’s a very important time of year.”
