P.A. police, fire department investigating car fire

Dec 14, 2016 | 4:00 PM

Prince Albert’s police and fire departments responded to two fires yesterday, including a burning car on River St. W. which attracted much attention on social media.

Members of the police and fire departments responded to reports of a vehicle fire at approximately 5:30 p.m. last night. Upon their arrival the car was fully engulfed in flames, and dramatic footage shared on social media appeared to show a small explosion inside the vehicle just as the firefighters arrived on the scene

The video, not even a day old, has already been viewed more than 34,000 times.

P.A. fire department (PAFD) members extinguished the burning car without incident. No injuries were reported, and investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze with assistance from the police identification unit. This morning only scorch marks and broken glass on the sidewalk marked the scene of the fire.

Fire Inspector Dave Davies said the department can’t comment on active investigations.

“We can’t release any information until the investigation is completed, in case there’s a criminal investigation required,” Davies said.

Davies said the vehicle is currently impounded in the custody of police investigators, and more information will be made public when the investigation concludes.

In a separate call from the same day, PAFD and police attended a structural house fire in the 100 block of 31st St. W. Nobody was injured in the fire, although the home’s kitchen suffered significant smoke damage. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
