Melfort residents discuss design of new skateboard park

Dec 7, 2016 | 1:00 PM

Plans for a new skateboard park in Melfort are rolling along.

There is a public meeting Wednesday night at the Kerry Vickar Centre to discuss the project’s design.

Community Services Director Teri Scaife said she’s hoping for a good turnout.

“We encourage everyone to come out and provide their feedback,” she said.

The construction of the skateboard park is tentatively scheduled to start in the spring, but hinges on final approval of a design.

Sparked by council’s decision to better address the needs of youth in the city, the park was decided on.  Council had been also approached several times over the past few years about the idea.

The cost of the project is $720,000, funded entirely by the city.

“We did attempt to get one grant through the Canada 150 but (the federal government) did not award us that grant,” Scaife said.

Construction is set to begin in the spring, and will mark phase one of the new recreation area in the Spruce Haven neighbourhood.

The next phase of the project will involve fresh paving and new washrooms. A second ice-surface is also planned for 2021.

The meeting tonight starts at 6 p.m.
