P.A. shuts off rural water utility; frustrates residents

Jul 25, 2016 | 6:46 AM

Residents of nearby Prince Albert municipalities may have found themselves without water this weekend. Some took to social media to express not only their displeasure, but their frustration claiming they were not given advanced notice.

On Sunday, the city of P.A. shut off the water supply to the rural water utility as a result of the oil slick travelling down the North Saskatchewan River. Because the situation is expected to last “for quite some time,” the utility is looking for alternate water supplies.

One commenter on paNOW’s Facebook page asked, “Why turn off the rural water, though? Do we not pay for the same service that the people living in the city does…”

Two other commenters may have accepted their situation, but were not pleased they hadn’t been given any warning.

“That’s all fine and dandy, but why cut off rural water without notice?”

“Yes!!! Notice of cut off, we had notice to conserve!!!”

The city suggested residents stock up at tank fills in St. Louis and Shellbrook. These sites all have treated, potable water. There are also two community wells in the RM of P.A. located in the Steep Creek region and on Duncan Rd. in the southern part of the municipality. There is also a community well in the RM of Buckland near the Junction of Highway 2 and Red Wing Road.

Rural water subscribers are also encouraged to keep an eye on the water levels in their tanks to ensure their pressure pump does not run dry.

–Editor’s note: This article was changed July 25 at 11:27 a.m. to reflect new information. According to the Water Security Agency, Birch Hills is not a suggested tank fill location due to turbidity in the town’s water.
