Completion expected soon for city’s Rotary Trail

May 10, 2016 | 5:00 PM

This year could mark the completion of the Rotary Trail with just over one kilometer to go, making the trail 23 kilometers in total after 13 years of upgrades.

Dave Fischl, multi-use trails committee chair, said although the trail hasn’t seen any construction in 2016 yet, it’s expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

“Everything is pointing towards that and some time through the spring and summer, hopefully we’ll be able to see the connection done and we’ll be right around the city,” he said.

Some of the land isn’t owned by the municipal government, so in conjunction with the city, the committee has also been working with land owners to finish the construction. Fischl said everyone from the Mayor to City Council is on board and looking forward to the completion of the trail.

The older part of the trail on the west end has seen some erosion along the river bank. Although, this won’t hinder the completion of the project, this portion will be redirected and trail users are asked to be careful for the time being.

The last leg of the path will join up the west side of the trail coming down from the Alfred Jenkins Centre to where construction left off in the west end of the city.

“It’s incredible that we’ve been able to make it as far as we did, going around the city and going through different areas and now we’re down to 1.5 kilometres, for the first time ever I can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.
