PAPHR dealing with nursing shortage

A search continues to fill three temporary full time registered nurse positions at the Shellbrook Integrated Health Centre.

As a result of the vacancies, five acute care beds will remain closed until Feb. 1.

The Prince Albert Parkland Health Region, which had originally announced the bed closures in early December, had hoped to have the beds open again this week. 

The health centre is currently running 15 beds instead of 20.

The staffing shortage has been a problem for several months but the health region was able to get by using contracted nurses from a private agency to fill the vacant shifts.

Those nurses are not available during this time period.

The emergency department at the health centre remains open 24 hours and the long term care portion of the facility has not been affected.
