Flood waters force people out of Cowessess First Nation

It could be a while before people at the Cowessess First Nation are allowed to go home.

The danger of rising flood waters forced about 125 people out late Tuesday. Many in the small community northeast of Grenfell have found temporary shelter in neighbouring Yorkton, Whitewood, and Broadview.

“Some are staying with family and friends, and some are staying in hotels. So they can just remain in those placements,” Provincial Manager for Emergency Social Services Norm Vetter said.

But another 80 people who found emergency shelter elsewhere will need to be moved.

“It's the persons in Grayson that are really the immediate concern. Their current lodging is not suitable,” Vetter said.

Emergency Social Services is working with the Red Cross to find better accommodations for those people.

Evacuees are being told the flood threat may subside within the next four to five days, and people may be able to go home this weekend. It's still too early to say though how much damage has been done to their homes.
