K9 officers make sick kids smile for the holidays

Dec 14, 2015 | 3:59 PM

It was a special day for children spending the holidays at the Victoria Hospital.

Local and provincial law enforcement agencies visited the pediatric ward on Monday with the company of two K9 officers.

The outing was part of the annual K9 Cops for Kids Program, which started in Prince Albert in 2012.

In the coming days, the group continues the tour, visiting the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon on Tuesday and the Regina General Hospital on Wednesday.

Organizers said they want to visit the pediatric wards to give kids, who are in hospital for Christmas, a little break.

Along with taking the K9 companions to visit the children, the group also leaves a memento with each one, this time around a plush German Shepard toy.

The program is provincially run, and incorporates various provincial agencies which use service dogs. This includes the Prince Albert Police Service, the Saskatchewan RCMP, Saskatoon Police, Regina Police and Moose Jaw Police, as well as people from the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

This year, K9 officer Phoebe—currently in training with the P.A. Police—visited the children along with new addition Helma—who’s still just a pup.

Their handlers will train them both to defend society, and give them experience in social situations—like the one on Monday.

Organizers hold fundraisers in order to keep the program going year after year.
