PBCN Urban Councillor removed from office

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) will be holding a by-election.

Chief Peter Beatty confirmed with paNOW on Monday that Warren McCallum has been removed as Urban Councillor.

A decision was made late last week by the Elders’ Council, in response to some serious allegations surrounding McCallum.

Those allegations included financial mismanagement, and breaching the band’s election code through conflicts of interest.

McCallum had allegedly appointed family members to the Elders’ Council, without taking the right course of consultation.

Chief Peter Beatty told paNOW that he had been advised by the Elder’s Council not to speak publicly on the matter until after the decision.

He added he was not privy to the reasons behind the decision to oust McCallum.

As per PBCN’s election act, a byelection must be called within 60 days.

Beatty said PBCN executive respects the decision of the Elders’ Council.
