Murder Mystery production allows audience to solve crime

Nov 24, 2015 | 11:06 AM

Odyssey Production’s newest dinner theatre production Murderous Crossing is set to be an interactive evening of murder, mystery and comedy.

The play, created by American playwright David Landau, is set in 1923 on board the luxurious cruise HMS Victoria as it crosses the English Channel.

It is described by Trent Gillespie, director of the production, as a comedic murder mystery that involves a lot of laughs, silliness and also some audience participation.

“The whole idea is that the cast will be mingling with the audience that will be part of the show,” said Gillespie. “The audience will be able to ask the cast questions, get to know the characters beyond the show during the meal and get clues to use through the end when they have an opportunity to help solve the murder.

“It’s a silly and very unique take on a murder mystery.”

Gillespie said the plot involves a wedding on board the cruise liner where financial gain is the main motivation between the bride Contessa Follette, played by Chantelle Hovdebo, and the groom John D. Rothchild, played by Ben Reimer.

“But throughout the play not everything is at it seems and there is a trail of lies and of course murder,” said Gillespie. “Murder is pretty serious, but it is very much a farcical murder mystery, so it does have aspects that are pretty serious in regards to why there is double crossing, etc., but the overall theme is that you are going to laugh.”

Gillespie said some audience members who are comfortable with getting more involved will have the opportunity to become part of the cast during the wedding scene of the play.

“There is also prize to be given away if there is someone in the audience who is a good enough sleuth to figure out who did it,” said Gillespie.

Tickets for the show are $50 and can be purchased at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre. Tickets must be purchased one day in advance to ensure a seat.

The dinner theatre will take place in the Travelodge ballroom from Thursday Nov. 26 until Saturday Nov. 28. Cocktails for the show will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the show and dinner following at 7 p.m.
