Kinistino wins in their category at Communities in Bloom National contest

Years of hard work, that focused on improving the community, has finally paid off in Kinistino.

The small town is the winner of the up to 1000 population category in this year’s Communities in Blooms National Competition.

Angie Bragg, president of the Communities in Bloom committee in Kinistino said she was very happy when she found out they had won. She said it’s a win that local residents and Kinistino’s Communities in Bloom committee members have been working towards since the community first became eligible to compete in the competition on the national level five years ago.

“It was great I was actually kind of shocked,” said Bragg.

Kinistino’s Communities in Bloom Committee formed in 2006 and since that time Bragg said the difference in the small town’s overall appearance has changed significantly.

“It is like night and day from when we started to now,” she said.

A few projects the Communities in Bloom committee has successfully initiated in the community since it was formed includes large barrels of potted flowers that businesses can sponsor, a memorial wall and rose garden and most recently the creation of a new park in the downtown area.

“We revitalized a green space in the downtown area and we added a fence around it and we have a little sitting area there as well,” said Bragg.

Kinistino was up against four other communities to win in their category including Arnold’s Cove in NL, Clinton in BC, and Valhalla Centre in AB.

Volunteer judges Bonita Lundberg and Roger Younker travelled across Canada during the summer on behalf of Communities in Bloom to evaluate each town. Lundberg said she was very impressed by Kinistino’s Communities in Bloom efforts.

“When you pass through the community of Kinistino it’s hard not to notice the small town’s beauty,” said Lundberg. “It was so neat and tidy I almost couldn’t believe it. All of their plants were monochromatically arranged in colours from white to pink to red, it was just amazing.”

This year’s Communities in Bloom National & International Awards Ceremony took place on Oct. 3. In Kamloops B.C.

On top of their win Kinistino also received a special mention for their floral displays.
