Rotary Trail getting close to completion

Oct 11, 2015 | 8:27 AM

With every passing year, Prince Albert’s Rotary Trail continues to get that much closer to completion.

Dave Fischl, chair of the multi-use trails committee, said that by the end of 2015 they still hope to have most of the trail finished with only 1.5 km remaining.

He said, as predicted in the spring, the trail is still expected to extend past the Alfred Jenkins Field House.

Once the Rotary Trail is completed it will be a little bit over 22 km long and wrap completely around the city.

It’s a project that has continued for 12 years but Fischl said he remains optimistic that the trail could finally reach completion in 2016.

“I am being very optimistic but I know the mayor and council seems to be leaning in that direction so I guess we will see how much money we have, and depending on some of the obstacles that we may encounter moving forward,” said Fischl.

“I am hoping by year end next year, 2016, you will be able to jump on your bike or go for a walk if you like and go right around the city.”

Something new that Fischl said he is looking forward to is the possibility of adding an additional one km loop around the Alfred Jenkins Field House.

“This is something the city has proposed and I think it’s a great idea,” said FischI. “I think this will be ideal when it happens.”

Although it was originally hoped the Rotary Trail would be completed within 10 years Fischl said it takes time to make something great and he is pretty sure that is what they have done.

“I believe it will be second to none…we built it to last so it’s not something that is going to fade away or crumble on us.

“It’s been a while and its still got a little ways to go but it’s going to be a fantastic trail when it’s complete.”
