City and province reach agreement on flood plain matter

Sep 8, 2015 | 11:34 AM

The one-in-500 year flood plain matter is on the city council agenda Tuesday night.

City council will be asked to approve a resolution regarding a tentative agreement reached by the City of Prince Albert and the province of Saskatchewan.

The province has agreed to sign off on the city’s community plan, without a resolution on the flood plain issue. Under the terms of the agreement the city will now have until December 31, 2016 to come to a resolution.

The Minister of Government Relations, Jim Reiter, drove to Prince Albert to meet with the mayor.

“There are just too many unanswered questions, too many variables out there,” said Mayor Greg Dionne.

Dionne said this agreement allows the city time to hold more meetings, adding he has been a bit surprised by the public feedback.

“I’ve got to give kudos to the residents, they’re looking for solutions. It’s easy to sit there and whine but this group that has been there is looking for solutions,” said Dionne.

Dionne said city administration has now received the Lydale report, which outlines the elevations giving residents a better idea of where the flood zone is located.

“I encourage (Prince Albert residents) to come to the planning department on the third floor and just give them your address, and they’ll give you the elevation and the risk you have in the one-in-500,” said Dionne.

The city has held two public meetings on the flood plain. Dates have not yet been set for the next meetings.

Dionne said he expects the community plan to come up for first reading at the next council meeting.
