Kijiji ad raises eyebrows in Prince Albert

Aug 24, 2015 | 6:49 AM

A recent ad posted on Kijiji listed a three bedroom home for rent on the East Flat in Prince Albert. The title stated “no natives please.”

City Councilor Don Cody represents the ward the home is located in. He hadn’t seen the ad, but was shocked to learn what it said.

“That’s just absolutely terrible,” said Cody. “Whoever heard of discrimination of that nature? It’s just unbelievable.”

Within the text of the ad, the poster said the tenant must be working and that being funded or a stay at home mommy are not jobs.

The ad also said aboriginals would not be considered.

“It’s just absolutely unheard of that they would put that kind of an ad in,” said Cody, “It’s as racist as it can get and there’s certainly no place in our society for that kind of thing.”

Cody said no one should be excluded in this way.

“After all we have an inclusive society,” said Cody, “I’m sure the neighbourhood would be a little upset to see the fact that you can’t move any certain types of people in.”

paNOW attempted to locate the homeowner on Sunday with no success, but did travel to the area to get reaction from neighbours.

Most people interviewed said they were appalled at the ad, and felt that that the home owner crossed the line.

A few people said the home owner was within their rights and could say what they wanted.

The ad has been removed from Kijiji.
