Mustangs one win away from RBC Cup berth

May 2, 2015 | 9:17 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are only one win away from a national Junior A tournament berth.

If the Mustangs win their first playoff matchup against the third-ranked Fort McMurray Oil Barons at the Western Canada Cup (WCC) Saturday at 2:30 p.m., they’ll automatically advance to the RBC Cup—regardless of what happens for the remainder of the tournament.

There are five teams at the WCC, which normally promotes two teams to the RBC Cup. But since the second-ranked Portage Terriers are hosting the RBC Cup, they have an automatic spot there. That means the bottom two teams in the tournament will be the only ones to miss the tournament.

To avoid that fate, the Mustangs will have to beat the Oil Barons, who are playing on home ice as they’re hosting the WCC. The Mustangs lost to the Oil Barons 3-2 in overtime in their last game on Thursday.
