Chili to raise funds for children

Prince Albert’s chilli-lovers will have nothing to complain about this weekend as the annual Power99fm Chili Cookoff gets underway.

“You come up with a theme and brew a big batch of chili and you just come have a lot of fun,” said Carol Soles, co-director of the Children’s Haven, about the event that is part of the lead up to the fundraising radio marathon.

The contestants dress up as the theme and bring their own special recipe for the judge to taste at the cook-off.

Soles said some past recipes have had some pretty “weird” ingredients.

Khris Labach knows what he’s going to have in his chili, but he’s not telling.

“I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve, but I don’t wanna let my secrets out,” Labach said.

Andrea Virlics said her team if going to be putting the chili together as they go, but she know it’s going to be sweet and spicy.

Bottomless chili bowls can be purchased for $5 dollars at the event.

“You can go to all the chili booths and sample each one of them or you can pick a favourite and just stay at that one chili booth, but it’s up to you what you want to do,” said Soles.

The event isn’t just about delicious food — all the proceeds go toward the Children’s Haven in Prince Albert.

Jolene Furi said that’s why she and her team decided to participate.

“We just wanted to be a part of helping raise money for the Haven, it’s something that our community really needs, and without it I don’t know, I couldn’t imagine what would happen if we didn’t (help it out).”

The cook-off takes place at the Prince Albert Inn in the Eagle’s nest, Mar.19.

Attendees must be at least 19 years of age.

The cookoff isn’t the only way to support the Children’s Haven this week.

Today is also coffee day, several shops and restaurants in Prince Albert will be donating a portion of the proceeds from coffee sales that day to the Haven.

“Not everyone can make a donation, but most people have a cup of coffee,” said Soles.
